We've waited almost 7 months, but the World Series is finally here. The Yankees will be making their first WS appearance since 2003 as they took care of the White Sox dynasty in 5 games.
Representing the NL will be the Astros, making their first trip since winning it in 2010 after sweeping the league's top team in St. Louis.
Rob Sullivan of the Cincinnati Reds won the Triple Crown this year and went from a star to superstar. The 27-year-old right fielder won the batting title with a .370 BA, topped the NL in homers with 57 home runs and took home the RBI crown, too, with 152. For that outstanding performance he is the 2nd winner of this very prestigious award.
"A Triple Crown...that's amazing," said Sullivan, "You can't try and win a Triple Crown. A lot has to go right for it to happen. You have to be the best in three categories. And not just for five, ten games, but for a whole season. It's special. It's really special."
Few men in baseball history have won the pitching triple crown. Leonard Ollis of the Chicago (A) White Sox joined this elite company today when the season ended, officially making him the league leader in ERA, K's and wins. Ollis put up a 22-6 record, an ERA of 2.47 and 268 strikeouts this season. He started 34 times, walked 40 and held opposing clubs to a .230 average. Ollis is the odds-on favorite to capture the Cy Young this year, which would be his 3rd. Congrats!
Tampa Bay OF Michael Loftus ended his assault on the single-season hit record just 2 shy this week. The youngster has had 200+ hits in all of his first 5 seasons and his total of 255 this season fell short of breaking the 100+ year old record. He finished the season at .393 almost becoming the first player since Ted Williams to break .400. In addition to his hits and average, Loftus had 69 steals, scored 136 runs, posted a VORP of 100, and had 58 XBH. The 27 year old already has 1160 hits and a career average of .359...unbelievable!
With their season ended earlier than last year, the Dodgers have no choice but to start planning for 2027. That planning started this past week by signing third baseman Ben Bocanegra to a highly structured deal that gets him to stay in LA for 2 years for $33 million. The 3rd year is a mutual option for $24 million, which would only be exercised if Bocanegra ages gracefully. That ensures everyone on the current roster is signed for next season. Only reliever Gary Hazlett and starter Robert Grundy are eligible for free agency after 2028, so the team should stay together for at least two more seasons.
