Earl Bailey at first refused to leave today's San Diego-Baltimore game after he suffered a scratched cornea while colliding with a player at a base. But his manager convinced him not to be foolish. "I want to be on the field," the feisty Baltimore left fielder said. "I'll play through just about anything." Given time to reflect on the situation, he knew it was in his best interest to get immediate treatment. The injury is expected to keep Bailey out of action for 3-4 weeks.
This year Bailey has collected a .351 batting average to date with 46 hits in 131 at-bats, 12 RBIs, no home runs and scored 21 times. He has played in 31 games. |

The Baltimore Orioles will have to make do without Silas Choy for 4 weeks. He suffered a strained rotator cuff muscle while throwing a pitch in the game today against the San Diego Padres. His teammates, understandably, were upset about losing the starting pitcher. "That's a tough break for him," one of them said. "But this team is resilient. We will just fill in until he gets back." Choy will miss 4 weeks.

Martin Gutierrez's been around the league long enough to appreciate the honor he received today. After going 5-0 in May, the 35-year-old Baltimore hurler has been named American League Pitcher of the Month.
