Vargas crafted an impressive 13-4 record and a 2.30 ERA. In 149 innings he allowed 102 hits, struck out 154, and walked 63. | | Friday, August 4th, 2028: Cruz Slams 5 Hits for Carolina Gilberto Cruz exploded for a barrage of base hits today at Mudcats Ballpark. The Carolina center fielder had a field day against the Midland RockHounds, finishing with a 5-6 day and a spot in the record book.
"It's a shame that we lost the game. It's really hard to enjoy what I did today," he said, lamenting the 9-7 loss. "You would think 5 hits would do it."
Asked about his great day, he replied, "My hitting philosophy is pretty simple. I focus just to see the ball and try to get a good pitch."
Well, Cruz must have focused at least 5 times and apparently got some good pitches, too. It was one of his best days ever with the bat.
G. Cruz singled in the 1st, singled in the 2nd, singled in the 4th, singled in the 6th, flied out in the 7th and hit a solo-shot off A. DeBurge in the 9th.
Looking at his stats this year, Cruz has compiled a .297 batting average, while hitting 6 home runs and driving in 35 runs. He has played in 101 games and scored 72 runs. | | Wednesday, July 26th, 2028: Mudcats Whitewash SeaWolves, Vargas Winner Speaking after the game, the Carolina manager said, "Ignacio Vargas had everything going for him. He controlled their bat speed, stayed down, had a lot of movement... he had it all... masterful."
Vargas held the Erie SeaWolves to 4 hits and fashioned a fine 4-0 shutout. He had 1 walk and 8 strikeouts in the game.
"We couldn't get anything going. He certainly had our number," the Erie skipper told reporters.
This season to date Vargas has a record of 13 wins and 4 losses with a 2.34 ERA, has appeared in 21 games and struck out 149 in 146.1 innings. | | | | Team Information | | Record overall | 65-55, .542 PCT | | Position in Division | 3rd, 6.0 GB | | Record at home | 33-27, .550 PCT | | Record on the road | 32-28, .533 PCT | | Record in X-inning games | 7-5, .583 PCT | | Record in one-run games | 17-14, .548 PCT | | Record versus LHP | 16-12, .571 PCT | | Record versus RHP | 49-43, .533 PCT | | Record last 10 games | 6-4, .600 PCT | | Record in April | 15-13, .536 PCT | | Record in May | 18-11, .621 PCT | | Record in June | 11-14, .440 PCT | | Record in July | 16-13, .552 PCT | | Record in August | 5-4, .556 PCT |
